GO FOR THE GOLD AT THE FLYING BUCKEYE REGIONAL

COBA is again co-sponsoring the Flying Buckeye Regional, August 9-14, 2005, at the Hope Conference Center in Fairborn. This is a great venue for a bridge tournament. It has an attached hotel with plenty of free parking. It is a one hour drive from Columbus. Future Master (non-life master) players have many events to choose from including the daily stratified events just for them, bracketed knockouts where you will be playing against other Future Masters, and single session events. What's more, players with less than five master points can play for free! Look for the advertisement in the May Bridge Bulletin, on the ACBL website, and at your club.

Please remember the joint Columbus/Dayton Regional coming up in August!

CINCINNATI NEWS
Jodie Kieffer, Reporting

January 31 thru February 6 found Cincinnati participating in the District 11 Sectional Tournament at Club that was hosted by Dayton. The table count was a bit disappointing this time, the night games especially finding not nearly as many tables. Christine and Gene Owens won the most masterpoints for the week, with Amit Ratun second. Hope everyone won a lot of silver points!

Carol Greve has taken over directing of the Wednesday night game. She has just recently passed the director's test, and is a welcome contributor to our directing staff (and a newly elected board member as well!). Come out and support her effort!

Nancy Sachs holds a team game the last Tuesday of every month at 11 a.m. She also has a non life master game at 11 a.m. on the third and fifth Fridays of the month. There is a mini lecture about 15 minutes prior to game time.

There are lectures every Tuesday night at 6:40 p.m. for the non life master crowd, just prior to the Tuesday night novice game.

Look for the mentoring program to start soon. The kickoff game for this popular summer program will be in May. Each mentor obligates to play with a mentee four times (at each pair's convenience) throughout the summer. There is a kickoff game in May and a wrap up game in September. Kay Mulford creates a special strata for these pairs on Monday nights, so it is a good option if you are looking for a good time to play with your mentee. It's a nice way to meet new people and share your knowledge.

WRESTLING BORED-A-MATCH

From the time I was first approached about writing this column, I have wrestled with exactly what it was I should be accomplishing here. Of course I must admit to being biased in the matter. I am a creative writer, not a reporter, and therefore not nearly as suited to the relating of facts and figures as I am to simply manufacturing my own. Still, it says right at the top of this page, "Reporting." It is something of a conundrum. (Though the implication of reversed emphasis on those three words isn't lost on me either.)

It has also come to my attention that others have also seen fit to "wrestle" with what it is I should be doing inside this space - before I really got a chance to work it out myself, practically before the ink was dry on my first column, and, of course, completely without my input. Go figure. Of course I could be jumping to conclusions about all that. Perhaps I was simply unavailable to join in the discussion. And it may well be that such a discussion is warranted. Though it does seem somewhat elementary that my presence might be useful. Certainly there must be some reason I was asked to perform this task in the first place - other than the fact that I was unable to think of an excuse quickly enough.

Traditionally it has been the purview of this particular little missive mainly to list winners in various tournaments and special games, masterpoint milestones, and the unfortunate loss of our members - each of whom, of course, are sorely missed. And while the importance of these events is beyond discussion, each of them is reported in our other venues, generally in a far more timely fashion than they ever could be here. So it was my hope to accomplish something slightly different in this column -to strike out in a new direction. Of course bridge players are human, and humans, undeniably, are largely resistant to change, so it naturally follows that my attempt to chart a new course, as it were, has not exactly been met with cheering in the streets, at least not in all quarters.

So, what to do?

Were I simply to rely on the input I have personally received from members of the unit about my work here thus far, there would be no question about my future course. I have been honored to have had literally dozens of compliments on my first column. Though it is obviously another attribute of human nature - albeit something of an infuriating and largely unproductive one - that those who are happy with someone's performance tend to discuss it with them directly, while those who are unhappy tend to discuss it with others. And, as I intimated earlier, discuss it they have.

I leave it now to you, members of the Central Indiana Bridge Association - the rightful owners of this space - where it is I should go from here. To that end I have set up a special e-mail address to receive your input. Please contact me at midwest-monitor@sbcglobal.net with your thoughts on the subject of what you would like to see in future columns. Though I am unlikely to respond to each personally, every communication will be an invaluable part of my decision regarding the direction for this column.

I thank you in advance for your opinions.

In closing, let me offer my sincere congratulations to all winners in the recent Indianapolis regional and sectional tournaments - most especially those in the non life master games. Kudos also to all of you who were so successful during the February STaCs. As always, we have had many players whose hard work and dedication have recently brought them the success of attaining yet another masterpoint milestone, among them Sandro Franchi's well-deserved entrance into the ranks of the Life Master. And I would be remiss if I failed to add my heartfelt appreciation and congratulations to the chorus of admiration and appreciation for Bill Witt, our long-term friend and newly-retired Indianapolis director who has given so much of himself to us and the game of bridge. Thank you, Bill.

Finally, just because I can, though it will be quite a bit belated by the time this is printed, I want to say, "Happy Birthday, Mom."

ABA / ACBL
Annease Comer, Reporting

The day for the ACBL/ABA Nationwide Unity game has been rescheduled for Saturday, June 25, 2006.

ABA Summer Nationals: St. Louis, MO, July 26-August 6. ABA/ACBL day is Friday, July 29. ACBL plans to provide refreshments (probably ice cream) following the evening session.

Plan to support the combined games!!!

ELIGIBILITY POINTS REMINDER

Generally, when an ABA registers to play in an ACBL game (club or tournament) ABA points should be divided in half and ACBL points added. When an ACBL player registers to play in an ABA game ACBL points should be multiplied by two and ABA points added. The player should then register to play in whichever strata points dictate.

Jimmy Comes to Town

Winning the two session open pairs on Saturday in January's Lexington Sectional was Jimmy Blackwell. He recently arrived in the Bluegrass from Columbia, South Carolina. Amassing more than 3300 masterpoints, Jimmy has some fifteen regional titles to his credit. Now retired, he was a parts manager for several Ford dealerships in North and South Carolina. He is proud of his wife and three sons, which include a set of twenty-five year old twins.

Jimmy's partner was Nancy Gordon, who was winning the Lexington open with her third different partner. Complete results to follow:

Friday Afternoon Open Pairs: A/B: Betty Raney - Joline Osborn. C: Bennie Shields - Clara Marcum.

Friday Afternoon 199er Pairs: A/B/C: Gayle and John Holmes.

Friday Evening Open Pairs: A: Susan Bullard - Harry Gordon. B: Betty Raney - Joline Osborn. C: Mary and Donald Feltman.

Friday Evening 199er Pairs: D: Irene Barker and Aurelia Huffman tied with Rick O'Connor and Cindy Tretter. E: William and Jane Coleman.

Saturday Open Pairs: A: Nancy Gordon - James Blackwell. B: Gerald Vanderhoef - Ali Vaezy. C: Paul Hightower - Michael Rieser.

Saturday Afternoon 199er Pairs: D: Vangie Smith - Cheryl Klein. E and F: David and Sharon Maul.

Saturday Evening 199er Pairs: D/E: Susan and Scott Cox.

Knockouts: A: Paul Heller, Jamie Schloss, Robert Stackhouse, Larry Lowell. B: Ray and Kathleen Linck, Walt and Atha Dickenson. C: Daniel Hance, Anthony Brockman, Betty Bradburg, Mary Zurborg.

Sunday Swiss Teams: A: Jack and Cheryl Ambach, Gary Peterson, Marsha Kyle. B: Joe and Phyllis Murray, Kurt Brescoll, Janet Adams. C: Cindy Tretter, Michiko Natsume, Courtney Thurman, Rick O'Connor.

Members of our unit won regional titles on islands in two different oceans within a month:

Paul and Debbie East won a flight B open in Hawaii in the first week of January.

Frances Barr then won a compact knockout in Bermuda about two weeks later. Frances said that, if this hand had not occurred, they would have made the finals of the bracketed knockout. Sitting with stiff jack, ten hearts to the queen-jack, stiff ace and the other black jack, the bidding went one spade to her left, pass, three spades forcing to her right. Over her four heart call she heard four spades and over five hearts, they went to five spades which made. At the other table her opponent holding this hand was greeted by an opening two spade call by Frances' teammate to HER RIGHT, a bid OUT OF TURN, thus barring his partner and allowing the ten heart hand to buy it for four hearts, making. Could the Bermuda Triangle have had anything to do with this result????

Closer to home, Sue Bullard has made Gold Life Master on the strength of a win on Friday night in the sectional and a win during STaC week. Perhaps the biggest win during STaC week was a 71% game by Sheila Bello and Reva Brehm winning thirteen points on Thursday afternoon.

In the local club masterpoint race in January, Ray Linck jumped out to an early lead of less than a point over none other than his wife Kathy. Andy Anderson, Alberta Feltman, and Nancy Gordon, and Carole Fox (tied for fifth) completed the top five.

Keep winning!!!! The column is much easier to write.

See you all (southern colloquium) in May at the Lexington Sectional.

APPALACHIAN UNIT 227
Toni Kimmel, Reporting

Congratulations to Dorothy "Dee" Hull on becoming Charleston's newest Silver Life Master at the Gatlinburg tournament last April. Dee travels to many tournaments all over the world.

The Kanawha Valley Bridge Assn. (KVBA) held their annual Christmas dinner on December 2 at the church home of Nancy and Arthur Altman. The elaborate buffet, from fancy desserts to hors d'oeuvres, was prepared mostly by Nancy and enjoyed by all. Again we give thanks to this couple for their untiring efforts in helping our clubs. The following were appointed to the board: John Mairs, Jim Sorrent, Gary Baker, Dee Hull, Betty Beulike, Sue Hundley, Byron Hill, and Janet Catsonic. A bridge game followed.

The Easy Aces Bridge Club held their holiday luncheon at Wellington's. The sumptous buffet luncheon was highlighted by wines provided by our wine steward, Ed Lewis. A bridge game followed lunch.

In attendance at the Mid-Atlantic New Year's regional in Charleston, SC, were Mr. and Mrs. Thomas Boyd. Tom came in third in flight B, NLM pair game with a pickup partner, Richard Tokaiz, from Virginia. Good work Tom! Mary Boyd was third in a couple of pair games. Also, in attendance, was that dynamic father-son duo, James Olson, Charleston, WV and David Olson, Baltimore, MD. When you have your picture in the daily bulletin, you know you have arrived. James and David were second in the Charity Pairs and placed high in several other events. Congratulations to this duo.

At the District 11 Grand National Team games held in Cincinnati, a team from Huntington came in first in Flight B. They were Chuck Blankenship, Marshall Hawkins, Tommy Laishley, and George Pope. They won 500 dollars to held finance their trip to Atlanta in July 2005 for further competition.

Congratulations to our chapter's newest Silver Life Master, Carolyn Lewis. She amassed over 400 points just in 2004. Mike Sloan also earned over 400 points last year. Two Louisville players topped the points' earnings in the most recent Lexington sectional. Marsha Kyle and Gary Peterson were awarded 22.5 points each. In the STaC tournament just completed, thirteen of our players finished in the top 100 with 1,519 players competing:
