The Cincinnati Regional was held April 26 to May 2. Look for this tournament yearly around these same dates. It was well attended, and everyone enjoyed the fabulous hospitality that was arranged by Diane Travis. She did an outstanding job.

Cincinnati has two new Diamond Life Masters (which is the 5000 masterpoint plateau)!!! They are Nancy Sachs and Fred Pollack! Congratulations to them both, what an accomplishment! They join Marshall Tuly and Bruce Parent, in this category from our unit.

The Mentor/Mentee Program had its kickoff party on May 23. It was a huge success! Thanks to Shirley Levy for organizing. We had 27 tables in play. First overall was Verdell Walker and Barbara Levinson. Good going girls! This program goes on from May until September. There are two weekly games that cater to this program, Sunday afternoons at 1 P.M. and Monday nights at 7 P.M. Both games host a mentor/mentee strata throughout the summer to help encourage these pairs, and give them their own category in which to play. Come out and try it. If you did not have a chance to sign up this year, make sure you do. It's a valuable experience for both the mentors and the people they mentor.

Cincinnati lost two more bridge players in the last few months. Elaine Hocks, who was a longtime member of Deschapelles, and always a lady and a pleasure, passed away recently. Bill Clevenger, who started duplicate just after I did, and was part of a group that I took private lessons with, also passed away. He was only 60. Both will be missed.

Remember to make your plans for the District 11 STaC in July. This one is hosted by Cincinnati. There are two sessions everyday, and a Swiss on Sunday. Lots of silver points available.

Bill And Neill Steal The Show

In April Dr. Bill Collis and Dan Neill teamed to win a regional open in Gatlinburg tournament and scored another win in a continuous game, collecting 38 points. Playing less than two years, as he has recently retired from his career in eye surgery (Ophthalmology), Bill now feels he can devote his full concentration to our sport. After playing a few times in the sixties, he knew he would love it, but had some professional goals to achieve first.

A pioneer in laser surgery, he was instrumental in bringing the first laser eye procedures to Lexington in 1971.

He was proud to say that he went Carpinice, Greece, the birthplace of his immigrant parents, eighty miles from Athens, where he gave free clinics to screen for glaucoma, cataracts, and retinal detachment (he was nice enough to spell these terms for me). Dr. Bill has also been to Morocco, Kenya (home of the best curry dishes in the world) and South Africa to do clinics for the poor.

Bill was quick to add that he enjoys the keen competition at our club, and appreciates how helpful they are in answering his questions.

Recent Bronze Life Master, Dan Neill, our Friday night club director, several years younger than his partner, has done quite well on the tournament scene and has a bright future. Congrats to both of these fine "new" players!!

Also winning in Gatlinburg in bracketed knockouts were the teams of Sondra Holt, Kathleen Dunigan, Shirley Williamson, and Theressa Lafontaine (new Life Masters Shirley and Theressa!); Terrell Holt, Ann McCullough, Charlotta Helton, and Georgia Ringo.

As usual, Sheila Bello, Mary Bell, Sue Leaf, and Carole Fox won a bracket. Then in the May Cincinnati regional, mesmerizing Mary took time off from her college studies to finish third in the prestigious individual Money Bridge Tour, one spot ahead of Michael Marlin.

Last, but far from least, Mike and Sandra Marlin, Wayne Whalen, and Nancy Gordon finished second in a star studded Sunday Swiss in Gatlinburg.

Special congrats to Pat Bimschleger for making Silver Life Master (She was nice enough to spell her last name for me).

In our Lexington May Sectional, Richard Moore and Hilda Merrill repeated their victory of a year ago in the Saturday open pairs.

Complete results are: Friday Afternoon Pairs: A: Bob Sulgrove - Vickie Sebastian tied with Ray and Kathleen Linck B and C: Lincks. 99er Pairs: Elaine Panke - Ilema Hayden. Evening Pairs: A and B: John Jensen - Suanne Blair C: Sally Bradford - Marilyn Bertoldo. 99er Pairs: Linda Glass - Bob Roach.

Saturday Afternoon Pairs: A: Hilda Merrell - Richard Moore B: John Jensen - Suanne Blair C: John Kennedy - Joseph James. Knockouts: I: Dennis Heshaven, Marsha Kyle, Tony Lipka, Mauri Malka II: Kenneth and Janet Dixon, Ernest and Judith Dalton. Sunday Swiss: A. Marsha Kyle, Cheryl and Jack Ambach, Dennis Heshaven B: Mildred Lockert, Cindy Tretter, Richard O'Connor, Courtney Thurman C: Joe and Phyllis Murray, Joseph James, John Kennedy.

See you in September at Pine Mountain . . .

Ever think about how convenient for the bird families that has their nest on the ground? Apply this to our upcoming regional tournament in Evansville, October 25-31. Call the Executive Inn today 877-424-0888 or e-mail exec@evansville.net and say "bridge tournament" to reserve a room. This is where you can eat, sleep, and play bridge all at the same place. Get tired of bridge, don't check out, stroll down to the Casino Aztar and join in the fun at their facilities. One of our unit members was in Reno touting our upcoming tournament to someone from the midwest and got a response that it was too far to travel. I guess they have moved Reno, NV east of the continental devide!

Congratulations to Richard Logsdon who achieved life master status. They had a great turnout with lots of good food. The one request he had was don't bring the usual German chocolate cake - whip up that delicious strawberry triffle that's sugar free, fat free, and cholesterol free.

Isn't it nice to have a doctor in the house. At the spring NABC in Reno, a request was made for a doctor. Dr. Deborah Gregory from Henderson responded immediately and discovered one of the players had collapsed. She immediately performed CPR, revived him, and at last report he was doing well in the hospital. In spite of this, Deborah and Richard Cornett paired up with Dorothy and Elbert Moore, finishing fifth. Deb obtained her first gold.

Madisonville has a new life master, Beverly Ray Matthews. Congratulations. She traveled to Gatlinburg, paired up with Charlotte Williams and played with Dr. Chella and S. Periyanayagam to win their knockout event.

Our dear friend Richard Spence passed away quite suddenly this past April. He was a great competitor, very seldom missing a bridge game. He was a gentleman who always had nice thing to say to you. Our condolence goes out to his wife Shirley.

The delicious buffet luncheon was highlighted by a selection of wines by our one and only wine steward, Ed Lewis. Congratulation to new officers: Isabel Boger president; Nancy Altman vice president; Dortha Wright secretary; Barbara Clark treasurer; and Charley Jones manager.

How would you like to be away at a conference and received a call from your home town saying, "We have a director's call." This actually happened to Jim Sorent who gave the ruling and said, "Call me back if you have any other director's calls." That's our Jim. You must understand that Jim is the director for the Wednesday nite closed social club.

On a sad note, we report the death of Janet Bower and Jane Walters. Both were long time members of the Easy Aces Bridge Club.
