It is with great sadness that I must report that Barbara Canon has passed away. Barbara had been unconscious for quite some time after a freak accident. She will be sorely missed in our bridge community.

Many of our members have reached master point milestones since the last article. Curtis Eskew and Helen Casey have become our newest Gold Life Masters with 2,500 points. Paul Coulter has become a Silver Life Master. Marilyn Swauger, Carolyn Lewis, and Charlene Daniels have become Bronze Life masters by surpassing the 500 point mark. Betty Paterson and Sandy Spears became Life Masters at our regional tournament in October. Congratulations to all.

The results of our recent election were as follows: Ken Hayes, president; Ellen Kozlove, vice president; Pam Feldhoff, secretary; Sonny Switow, treasurer; and Paul Coulter, historian. Karen Clear, Jean Donoho, Barb Moir, and Lonnie Crumes were elected to the board of directors. Jane Wininger was elected as the downstate representative. Aurelia Huffman was elected by the board to fill a vacant seat. Our thanks to Jim Watson, Glendene Keeling, Duane Andrews, Sandy Andersen, Phyllis Costello, and Jane Northcutt for their years of service on the previous board.

Finesse West Bridge Tours stopped by our center on their way down the Ohio River. We had a very nice dinner game for them with a fabulous turnout. In the two section event Mary Redmond and Marianne Cooper finished first overall followed by Jane Franklin and Dee Phillips. A wonderful time was had by all.

Twelve tables came out to play in the ACBL-wide charity game. Ken Hayes and Beve Smith came in first overall, with Ellen Kozlove and Chris Panagopoulos second. Gail Slater and Tinker Zimmerman were first in B and C. Matt Just and Kit Overpeck were second in B. Marty Weinberg and Myra Garon were second in C. Thanks to Ellen Schmidt for all of her hard work in running this event.

The directors hosted their annual Holiday Party and once again our club was packed to the rafters. There was plenty of good food, good bridge, and holiday cheer. It was a marvelous festive occasion.

We are changing the locations of our tournaments in Louisville. Our sectionals will be held at the Brownsboro Inn which is conveniently located on Brownsboro Road right by the Watterson Expressway. The regional, which we will hold in conjunction with Lexington each year, will be held at Ceasar's Casino just across the river from downtown Louisville. Both of these locations will be excellent sites for hosting tournaments. Come see us at our tournaments in the future.

CINCINNATI NEWS
Jodie Kieffer, Reporting

This year's charity game was held October 19. The winners in Flight A: Dyan Vaughn and Debbie Cummings; Flight B: Bonnie and David Parker; Flight C: James and Linda Shaw.

The Cincinnati Bridge Association held elections for the Unit 124 board of directors at our fall sectional. We hold elections each year at the fall tournament. Each year five board members are up for election. Each person is elected to a three year term, and is allowed to serve two consecutive terms. At least a one year break must be taken before a person is eligible to run again, after serving two terms. The total board consists of 15 members. Each year there is an organizational meeting held, usually in December, to vote the officers into office. Elected this year to a three year term: Patti English, Shirley Levy, Fred Pollack, Steve Megerle, and Joe Lutz. They join Sis Gleisinger, Pat Newman, Joy Norris, Carolyn Ahlert, Barbara Levinson, Diane Travis, Linda Wolber, Nancy Sachs, Jerry Violetta, and Alex Pappas to make up the 2004 board of directors. Leaving the board this year: Elena Hickman, Jane Burpee, and Walter Bunker. (None of these people ran for another term.) Rejoining the board: Steve Megerle and Joe Lutz.

This year the holiday party was held December 14 at Kenwood Country Club. A good time was had by all. This year the CBA had another bumper crop of new Life Masters, 19 in all. They are: Phyllis Bishop, Jerry Black, Bobby Carter, Tonette De Angelis, Mike Dickman, Virginia Getter, Sis Gieisinger, Sue Hermans, Tom Hillger, Larry Meyer (the one with the son named Dave), Steve Moese, Cliff Pleatman, Myma Rosen, Herb Schapera, Pat Scheimann, Mary Segal, Jeanne Weyers, Dorothy Wierwille, and George Wierwille. Dorothy accepted George's cup because he passed away before being able to accept his award.

Award winners this year: Rob Weidenfeld and Don Walker won the CBA heat of the 2003 World Wide Bridge Contest.

Barbara Levinson and Norm Coombs won the Israel and Eva Horwitz Senior Award for winning the 2003 ACBL-Wide Senior Game held in February.

The Gerald Steuernagle Award is awarded to a player for outstanding contribution to the promotion of duplicate bridge in Cincinnati, exemplary behavior at the bridge table, and willingness to help new players. The recipient is Kay Mulford (picked by a committee made up of former winners of this award).

Tournament Award Winners: The Jane Ward Memorial Award (Awarded to the player with less than 20 points winning the most master points at the Cincinnati summer sectional): Pat Dutson.

The Jane Ward Memorial Award (Awarded to the player with more than 20 masterpoints winning the most masterpoints at the Cincinnati summer sectional): Nancy Sachs.

The Manny lsralsky Award (Awarded to the player winning the most points at all Cincinnati sectionals in a calendar year): Nancy Sachs.

The Jan Weyant Award (Awarded to the player winning the most points in the Cincinnati regional): Norm Coombs.

Masterpoint Award Winners: All the master point awards are based on a one year period beginning in October and running until October of the following year. The reason for this is that the ACBL puts out new official masterpoint listings each October.

Rookie of the Year (Awarded to the player winning the most masterpoints, having started the year with less than 50 points): Patti English.

Future Master of the Year (Awarded to the player wininning the most masterpoints having started the year with more than 50 masterpoints, but not yet a life master): 1. Sis Gleisinger 2. Sue Herrnans.

The District 11 STaC (Sectional Tournament at Clubs) will be held at the bridge center starting Monday, January 26, 2004. Make your plans to play as many sessions as possible!

The Grand National Teams District final will be held at the Cincinnati Bridge Center February 7-9. You do not need to have played before this date to qualify. Simply register your team and come to play.

The Cincinnati regional is April 26-May 2, 2004. The District 11 tournament schedule has been changed to allow Cincinnati a regional in the spring each year. This way you can plan ahead, and count on this tournament each year.

There have been changes made to the directing team at the bridge center. Directing on Wednesday and Friday nights is Don Walker, on Monday (Home-style and Duplicate) and Thursday nights is Kay Mulford.

Tuesday nights, first Tuesday, Otto Walter, second Tuesday, George Deidesheimer, third, fourth, and fifth (if there is one) is Ron Babcock. Monday daytime (Dechapelles, invitational club), Pat Newman. If you need a partner for a game, these are the people to contact. Tuesday evenings there is always a standby partner, no need to call. Deschapelles (Monday daytime) has a person in charge each month to take reservations, and work on partnerships, contact that person for a partner.

Don Walker has started a Friday night pair game at 7:30 P.M. each Friday night. If you haven't come out to play, please do so!

As always, contact me at 513-474-4721 or MJKieffer@yahoo.com.

The North American Pairs District final was held during the Cincinnati sectional in late October. There were very few local players represented, but Bob Lyon and John Hinton were second in Flight A and will be eligible to compete in the National Final during the Spring NABC in Reno. This shows that just about anyone can do well in this event and should encourage all of you to participate in 2004.

Afternoon winners were Natan Erdberg and Patty Cole; evening winners were Elizabeth Hourigan and Thelma Trudgen. The ACBL charity game was held at the Indianapolis Bridge Center on November 24. The Grand National Teams District final will be held at the Cincinnati Bridge Center February 7 and 8. Although winners do not receive compensation to compete at the Nationals (as they do in the North American Pairs), this is still a good opportunity to compete and win masterpoints. There are four flights in this event (Open, 0-5000, 0-2000 and NLM). There is no club or unit qualifying, so anyone can play (as long as the entire team is from District 11).

The next charity game is March 17. The location of the event has not been set. Also, there will be another sectional in Indianapolis April 1-4, this time at the Indianapolis Bridge Center. More details appear in the Monitor. Finally, Indianapolis will be hosting a regional December 7-12 at the Adam's Mark Hotel near the airport. I plan to chair this event and I hope to see a strong turnout of local players. If you or someone you know have not played much bridge lately, consider coming out to the regional.

The following players have reached master point milestones: Gold Life Master: Max Banan; Silver Life Master: Fritz Hadley, Joseph Bergman, Stu Hoffherr, Beulah McCracken, Penelope Millar; Bronze Life Master: Jeanne Hendey, Lon Bell, Helen Dickinson, Sheila Fasbender, Bobby Russell, Gwen Tierney. APPALACHIAN UNIT 227
Bessie Haley, Reporting

The ACBL Instant Matchpoint game on September 10 was held at the Women's Club in South Charleston. We would like to thank the bridge players from Ashland, KY, Huntington, WV, and surrounding areas who attended. Winners were: 1. Clara Marcum - Martha Newman 2. Dixie Gussler - Gordon Baker.

Congratulations to our members who placed in the District 11 STaC games held beginning the week of September 8. James Sorrent - Kathy D'Antoni, Frances Van Cleve - John Chambers, Charles Jones - Loretta Ecker, Flossie Kourey - Betty Woomer.

Dee Hull and Mary Boyd, along with Nancy and Arthur Altman went to the Columbus Dayton regional in July and came away with 12 gold points after placing in the knockout team games.

Mary Carden and Loretta Ecker attended the Louisville regional in October. Ms. Ecker was in need of 12 gold points to become life master. She is now in need on only five gold points. We are rooting for you, Loretta.

Our membership has suffered another blow in the death of one our charter member, Ruth Fritts Moore. She passed away suddenly on September 3, 2003. Ruth was an avid and accomplished duplicate bridge player. Her knowledge of the game and skill at the table were formidable. She exuded a pleasing personality and a great sense of humor. She made a grand slam in our hearts. I will always remember her as the lady, when it was her turn to lead, always asked, "Is it I?"

Also, Ester Stowers, a charter member of the Easy Aces, passed away in June. She had been ill for quite some time and will be sorely missed.

The following hand was sent to me by Osce Roberts. He stated that it came up during our weekly bridge game.
